On Tuesday 31/08/2021, a meeting was held in the Headquarter Offices of the Paphos Chamber of Commerce & Industry among delegation of PCCI and the Ambassador of U.S.A in Cyprus Mrs. Judith G.Garber. From the side of PCCI the meeting was attended by the President of the Chamber Mr. George Mais, the Vice Presidents Mr. Charalambos Papantoniou, Mr. Stefanos Stefanou and Mr. Pantelis Evangelou as well as the Honorary Secretary of the Chamber Mr. Zenonas Zenonos and the Director of Paphos Regional Board of Tourism Mr. Nasos Hadjigeorgiou.

The discussion was very productive and focused on the relations between the two countries but also on the prospects that exist for further development and deepening of economic relations.

At the meeting was discussed  the situation prevailing in the local economy and the efforts from PCCI and  the private sector so as to overcome any problems and the negative consequences that caused by the pandemic and manage to continue the positive growth of the province in relation to the implementation of the new projects and the improvement of the infrastructure implemented by the Central State and the Local Authorities.

The USA can certainly play a very serious role in the Cypriot economy but also in issues related to security and peace in the Eastern Mediterranean region , something that will significantly improve the business climate in Cyprus.

The two sides discussed also about Banking sector and the improvements that needs to be done so as to facilitate foreign and local investments and find the ways of cooperation between businesses of the two countries and issues of investment in Cyprus on the part of American companies. Except from the aforementioned, they discussed ways of cooperation between the two countries in the fields of Tourism, Education, Health, High Technologies and Green Development with emphasis on Renewable energy sources.

On Thursday 05/08/2021 a meeting was held at Paphos Chamber of Commerce & Industry Offices among the PCCI President and Secretary/ Director Mr. George Mais and Mr. Marinos Stylianoou respectively and the Second Secretary of the High Commission of India in Cyprus Mr. Nandulal Bhookya.

The President of the Chamber, Mr. Mais, discussed in detail with Mr. Bhookya both the deepening of relations between the two countries and the prospects of cooperation between the business community of Paphos and the business community of India, a country with a population of 1,393,409,000 residents.

The President of the Paphos Chamber and Mr. Bhookya stressed the need for cooperation between the two countries in Tourism and investment both in the Hospitality Industry and the Real Estates.

Mr. Mais had the opportunity to discuss with the Second Secretary of the High Commission of India in Cyprus issues of strengthening the business and trade relations of the two sides. More emphasis was given to importing/ exporting commodities especially in the field of pharmaceutical goods, fertilizers, steel, and other products. The need for employment of technical and skilled personnel from India was extensively discussed. The two sides analyzed ways to attract tourists from India to Cyprus and Paphos in particular.

According to data from PCCI, economic relations between the two countries show a positive image with good prospects for the future. There is stability between the two states in the field of trade in goods and in services. “The investment sector is what we aspire to stimulate, strengthening the already encouraging data that have been recorded," said Mr. Stylianou Marinos.

Finally, it was decided to take place as soon as possible online meeting between members of PCCI and Indian Companies in an effort to find new forms of cooperation between the two communities and further development of existing ones.

Mr. Bhookya informed us that because of the 75th anniversary of Independence of India that is on 15/08/2021, High Commission of India is organizing a series of cultural events in all cities of Cyprus, including Paphos.

The Paphos Chamber of Commerce and Industry welcomes the signing of the Agreement yesterday, 04/08/2021, between the Ministry of Tourism and the Consortium Deloitte Ltd and Triton Consulting Engineers SA, for conducting a comprehensive feasibility study for the combined development of Marina and infrastructure for the reception cruise ships in the area of ​​Kissonerga Paphos.

We remind you that the work of the Combined Development of Marina and Cruise Ship Reception Infrastructure in the Potima area in Kissonerga, the Ministry of Tourism held an international competition entitled "Competition for the provision of services for a comprehensive feasibility study of a combined marine development (marina and infrastructure that can accommodate cruise ships) in Kissonerga area, pafos »

The Paphos Chamber of Commerce and Industry met with the President of the Poltava Chamber of Ukraine, Mr. Borisenko Volodymyr Anatoliyovych, and his delegation, in the presence of the President, Mr. George Mais and the Secretary/ Director Mr. Marinos Stylianou.

The President of the Chamber, Mr. George Mais, after welcoming Mr. Borisenko and his delegation, started the discussion, emphasizing the need to find ways to deepen trade relations between the two regions. Special mention was made of the Covid-19 pandemic, which he said, in addition to the other unpleasant situations it caused, affected the air connection and the tourist flow between the two countries. The fact that Poltava has an airport did not avoid to express its optimism that it is possible the two destinations, with chartered flights, could open a very important channel of cooperation and development between them.

He stressed that there is interest from Paphos businessmen for importing products from Ukraine such as timber, agricultural fertilizers and other commodities, but there are some problems that, it would be good, the Chamber to deal with to solve them. Mr. Mais referred to the problems in the size and volume of the order where many factories, due to the small quantities from Cyprus, do not show much interest in business as well as the problem of means of transport. He also explained that it would be prudent to look for ways to control the quality of goods in order to avoid adverse adventures by traders, thus enhancing the credibility among traders.

The President of the Poltava Chamber showed particular interest in solving the above problems and stressed the need for air connection between the two regions. He also informed that the airport has been recently renovated and modernized in an effort to attract new airlines. Tourist interest is a given where it could be combined with social, cultural and other activities. The Ukrainians are also interested in the field of Real Estate and Investments, where this will be achieved through the contact and the visit of the two peoples.

It was agreed between the two Presidents that a teleconference would soon be arranged with the participation of Paphos businessmen and Poltava businessmen in order to start a two-way business relationship and activity.

On Monday 31/05/2021, a meeting was held in the Headquarter Offices of the Paphos Chamber of Commerce & Industry among delegation of PCCI and H.E the Ambassador of France in Cyprus Salina Grenet-Catalano. From the side of PCCI the meeting was attended by the President of the Chamber  Mr. Mais Georgios, the Vice-Presidents of the Chamber Mr. Papantoniou Charalambos, Mr. Stephanou Stephanos, Mr.Evangelou Pantelis, Mr. Chrysanthou Chrysis and the Secretary/ Director of the Chamber Mr. Stylianou Marinos.

The President of the Chamber, Mr. Mais extensively discussed with Mrs. Salina Grenet-Catalano both in deepening the existing excellent relations between the two countries and for the prospects of cooperation between the business Paphos community and the business community of France, a country with a population of 65 million but also with great influence in the various International Organizations as well as with a leading role in the European Union.

The President of PCCI expressed his desire to the Ambassador to increase the presence of French Companies in Paphos and Cyprus in general .Except from the aforementioned, they discussed ways of cooperation between the two countries in the fields of  theme Tourism, Education, New Technologies & Innovation and general policy regarding the New Strategy for Tourism creating an identity, 'branding'. Mr. Mais had the opportunity to discuss with Ms Grenet for aid matters of business and trade relations between the two sides and to find ways to attract tourists from France with the first and best to establish more air routes with direct flights from France to Cyprus and Paphos in particular. Moreover, according to data from PCCI in 2018 36.5 0 0 French visitors arrived in Cyprus , while in 2019 the number of French visitors decreased to 31,114 .

The Ambassador Mrs Catalano discussing with the Director of the Chamber as well as attendees Vice-Presidents of PCCI stressed the need for cooperation between the two countries on issues of Capital Investment, Education, Renewable Resource Energy , Culture relying on our long history and brilliant archaeological wealth as well as for investments in Medical field. The Ambassador showed great interest in such partnerships and made special mention of the great archaeological places  that can attract a large number of visitors. Agrotourism, is a sector with potential due to Paphos countryside that we should promote accordingly.

At the end of the meeting , the two sides hinted that Paphos has all the necessary components needed to attract such investments and agreed for further contacts.

The Paphos Chamber of Commerce & Industry and Electi Academy are co-organising an introductory webinar free of charge on blockchain technologies and their impact on business.

The Harvard Business Review reported a few years back that “The technology most likely to change the next decade of business is not the social web, big data, the cloud, robotics, or even artificial intelligence. It’s the blockchain…”. Since then, the work performed and funds invested in blockchain and decentralized ledger technologies have ‘exploded’ with at least 2 Billion $ invested in the sector so far.

Furthermore, the Cyprus government has already published a national strategy on blockchain (https://bit.ly/39aMBzL) and is actively working on drafting a legal framework governing such technologies that will allow companies and organizations to enter and meaningfully participate in the Blockchain market.

We would like to inform you that at the Electoral Assembly of the Paphos Chamber that will take place on Friday, July 17, 2020 at 5.00 p.m in the Offices of the PCCI the members of the Paphos Chamber will have the right to vote, which by July 12, 2020 will have already paid any amount that is immediately required (including all Subscriptions and in 2020 as well as other financial obligations) by this member on the part of the Chamber of Paphos and meaning that at the date of the voting it has already completed at least six (6) months as a member of the Chamber. (paragraph 22 of the Articles of Association of PCCI).

It is noted that after July 12, any payment for voting rights purposes will not be accepted.

The Secretary / Director of the Paphos Chamber of Commerce and Industry attended the International School of Paphos to speak to high school students as part of their Professional Orientation Week. Mr. Stylianou, through his presentation and lecture to the students, developed political, economic and general issues regarding the role of the Local Chamber of Commerce and Industry as an Organization in the development of the local economy. It analysed its multifaceted and multi-dimensional role for SMEs and explained the strategic policy for the implementation of infrastructure projects in our province.

Through the dialogue, the students posed several questions that were answered on the basis of arguments and gained a better picture of studies in Finance, Economics, Political Science, Accounting and Business. In addition, the role of the Chamber in our city's activities as an institution, as an organization promoting local economy and supporting small and medium-sized enterprises for over 50 years, has been explained to students, an istitution in almost all countries of the world with similar organizational structure and action.

The Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Mr. Giannis Karoussos attend a long-running meeting hosted by Pafos Chamber of Commerce & Industry. At the meeting present was the District Hotel Association, the PRBT, District Members, the Paphos District Officer and the relevant government departments. At the meeting, many proposals were heard, the Minister assured that many of them would be implemented immediately and also referred to the establishment of monitoring committees in all provinces to make the ministry's work easier and effective, as well as close cooperation with other ministries involved in better coordination of efforts.

The main topic of discussion was the processes and new developments for the construction of the new Paphos-Chrysochous road, which emphasized the need to pass laws against appeals to avoid delays in projects of public interest. As the Minister pointed out, 3.2 million will be allocated for improvement works on the existing road and environmental approval and integrated planning is expected to start and implement Phase B of the project.

The President of PCCI Mr. Dimitriadis referred to the Pafos-Airport tourist area along the Ezoussa River, to the Tomb's of the Kings Avenue - Coral Bay tourist area, a request dating back to 1988, but also to the construction and operation of the western Paphos bypass. Concerning the road of the tourist area of ​​Paphos-Airport with the intervention of the PCCI, Minister G. Karoussos was on the spot together with the officials in order to personally identify the problem and the urgent need for immediate implementation of the project. Mr. Dimitriadis emphasized that the PCCI will receive the terms of tender from the Ministry of Agriculture and that a new environmental study will be carried out by the Chamber with instructions from the Ministry and called for an accelerated process.

PCCI Secretary/ Director Mr. Marinos Stylianou referred to the construction of green bridges, Green Infrastructures built throughout Europe and the world at large, an issue which the relevant departments had not taken into account after referring to the usual gray bridges during the studies and stressed that the green design of eco-bridges overcomes all environmental problems. In support of this, he submitted to the Minister a memorandum with extracts from the report of the United Kingdom Environment Committee Natural England (NECR181 | July 2015) but also the Commission's report to the EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT, THE COUNCIL, THE EUROPEAN ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL COMMITTEE AND THE COMMITTEE OF THE REGIONS | Brussels, 24.5.2019 COM (2019) 236 stating such infrastructures accompanied by photographic material. Minister G. Karoussos appeared to be positive about the implementation of the green infrastructure, citing a similar example they implemented in Australia with an eco-bridge for crossing red crabs in a highly environmental area.

In the meeting also discussed the issue of renovating the Provincial Archaeological Museum. Mr. Karoussos said that the completion of the project and the opening of the Museum is expected in April. The President of the PRBT Mr.George Mais spoke about the days and hours of operation of the archaeological sites and noted that in all countries only one day archaeological sites remain closed. He even estimated that the archaeological site of Kato Paphos should remain open for visitors on weekends. For his part, the Minister of Transport noted the need to test free access to our archaeological sites as that has been implemented in many countries around the world.

In the meeting also has being discussed other serious issues such as the regulatory plan for the improvement of Greek Avenue without a traffic island, the new urban transport contracts for Paphos District as well as significant problems created at Paphos Airport.Mr Mais referred to the need to expand Pafos Airport facilities and in particular the departure lounge, the creation of VIP lounges, the improvement of air conditioning at Paphos Airport and also discussed the problems that have arisen with taxis, the anarchy that prevails, the uncertainty and the issue of tariff adoption.

Finally, regarding the protection of coasts and the creation of beaches, the president of the Paphos Hoteliers Association Mr. Thanos Michaelides emphasized the need to create breakwaters to protect and improve the beaches from the are called 'mbania' Kato Pafos to the Phaethon Hotel, which is still in the Environmental Authorities. In fact, he stressed that with the erosion that is being observed year by year the problems are increasing and if no immediate action is taken both, the Private Sector and the State, will find themselves in a deadlock.
